COLUMBUS WHITEWATER
Columbus, Georgia
A dream of the Turner family, the Columbus Whitewater Venue was an extensive undertaking. The first - and most important - task was securing permits from the US Army Corp of Engineers and the State Historic Preservation Commission for the complete removal of three historic dams. Second was the environmental permitting required to restore the Chattahoochee River to its former conditions as a natural flowing river.
To accomplish this monumental design effort, French & Associates focused its efforts on the dam removal and all “out-of-water" design items, while McLaughlin White Water Design provided all “in-water” design elements. French & Associates, in concert with Aaron & Clements, Program and Construction Managers, performed Corp of Engineers and environmental permitting. Upon its completion, the Columbus Whitewater Venue on the Chattahoochee River has become the longest urban whitewater course in the United States.
